Broadband for seniors

According to government figures, only one in five Australians aged over 65 years currently use the Internet.

Broadband for Seniors is an initiative of the Federal Government who supply two free computers and desks to organisations like OneCare.
The aims of Broadband for Seniors
  • to provide seniors with free access to kiosks that host Broadband for Seniors,
  • to help seniors gain confidence using computer technology,
  • address the issue of older Australians feeling isolated and "left Behind" iin a technological age,
  • to build community participation and social inclusion amongst older Australians.
It benefits seniors who feel threatened by new technology and the Internet. Seniors learn how to use a computer, access the Internet and communicate with friends and family via email.
Tutoring is offered by volunteers who typically give 3 hours weekly or fortnightly as able.  We are always looking for new volunteers to help out with this venture  - all you need is the ability to use the internet, send emails, open a gmail account and use a simple word processor.  Sessions are usually up to 90 minutes long.

Broadband For Seniors defines anyone over 50 years of age as a senior.  We are also happy to help under 50's but seniors are required to be given priority.
Seniors with their own laptop are welcome to bring them along so that the tutoring can be done on a familiar computer environment.
Our kiosk is located at 61 Candover Street, Geelong West and is currently open on three days per week.
This is a free service but appointments are necessary and may be made by calling 5229 2133 on Tuesdays and Fridays.
